There are several ways to figure out which type is best. If a pattern calls for x amount of a type of fabric, then you need that type of fabric.

I would recommend staring with sturdier fabrics like cottons. You can however use batiks, homespun, flannels, etc. A much less frustrating start can be found using cotton unless you are a very skilled seamstress who has worked with various types of fabric before.

Hello! Meg Cox, our Resident Quilting Expert, has this to say: "The best fabric for a quilt that you will wash and use is quality quilter's cotton. That's what most independent quilt shops are filled with, and even the chain stores will have a section of quilting fabric. Make sure it isn't mixed with other fabrics, such as polyesters. Cotton is sturdy and holds color well. If, however, you are making a wall hanging, a quilt to hang on the wall and enjoy like a framed photograph or artwork, then your choices of material are pretty much unlimited. Art quilters love to play with silks, satins, velvets, and other materials such as paper and recycled plastics. Go for it!"
