How do I sew knit and stretch fabrics?

I want to sew a T-shirt-like specialty knit, which is VERY stretchy. But when I use a straight stitch, my sewing machine throws a tantrum--bunches up the fabric and shuts down. Any ideas?

    Our resident sewing expert Steffani Lincecum writes, "I always use the stretch stitch on my sewing machine. It actually does a nice little back stitch and makes a very strong, very stretchy seam. Make sure you are certain of your alteration before you sew though, because it is tough to rip this seam out! I also use the overlock stitch on my sewing machine, but often if you use the stretch stitch you don't really need to overlock the edges. A knit as tightly woven as a t-shirt knit won't actually fray or unravel. That's why you are finding so many great deconstructed raw edges now on knits."
