Sugar Skull Wreath

One of my favorite aspects of southwestern culture is Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the lives of deceased friends and family members. It is closely associated with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, and it takes place on November 1st and 2nd.

I love all of the art associated with Day of the Dead, especially calaveras de azúcar, or sugar skulls. Sugar skulls represent the souls of the departed and are placed on ofrendas, or altars, as offerings to the deceased. They are beautiful, inedible works of art. Looking at photos of sugar skulls online inspired me to make this wreath for my home.
