WASHI TAPE DECORATED STAIRS
Designer Pascal Anson created a design for the stairs to his rooftop extension inspired by the artist Jim Lambie. In his book “Ordinary Made Extraordinary,” he explains: “I wanted to use tape in a slightly less formal way and come up with an idea that everyone could try. So I imagined what it would be like if tape behaved like a liquid and what a spill of magic, multi-colored paint would look like if it ran down a flight of stairs.” He decided to “animate” the tape to make it look like spilled paint.
The project is easy to do, Anson explains. “If you are careful the magic tape carpet can last a reasonably long time, but it is a temporary solution. In the context of my home it leads the eye into a special small room, which just has a sofa and a view of the sky, perfect for drinking a cup of tea and for quiet contemplation.”

Step 1
Start with clean, dust-free stairs. You don't have to paint them! Begin at the top of the stairs, at any point, and with any tape.
Step 2
Keep some tension in the tape to make sure there are no wrinkles or bumps. Don't try to coordinate your color choices. A random mix of widths, lengths and colors works best. Trust me.
Step 3
Work your way down, applying the tape in straight lines. Use a credit card to get rid of bubbles and smooth the tape down, right into the angles under each step.
Step 4
You can work step by step, or in sections - you don't have to do the whole run in one continuous strip.
