Stars and Stripes Mason Jar Glasses

Decorated glasses for a summer celebration set a playful tone. Add a fun striped straw, and it’s time to party!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED Basic Washi Kit, Washi: Dotted red, standard Patterned blue, standard Light blue, standard Patterned red, standard Light yellow, thin 5 Mason jars with two-part lids, 8-ounce size 1 sheet of transparency film Black fine-point permanent marker Star template (see page 141) Scissors Hole punch 5 striped paper straws

Step 1

Remove the inner solid circle part of the lid from all the Mason jars. Trace one of the inner solid circles five times on the transparency with the black permanent marker. Set the inner solid circle parts of the lids aside.

Step 2

Adhere strips of washi in various colors and patterns onto one of the traced circles, allowing the tape to overlap as much as you want (see Vellum Method on page 12). Make sure that the washi extends slightly beyond the circle. Repeat this step for all the traced circles.

Step 3

Use the marker’s tracings as a guide to cut out all the circles with scissors.

Step 4

Trace the star template five times on the transparency with a black permanent marker.

Step 5

Stick small strips of dotted red washi onto one of the stars, allowing the strips to slightly overlap one another. Make sure that the washi extends slightly beyond the star. Repeat this step for all the traced stars.

Step 6

Cut out all the stars with scissors, using the marker’s tracings as a guide.

Step 7

Punch a hole at the center of each of the cutout stars. Also punch a hole slightly off-center on each of the cutout circles

Step 8

Slip a straw through one of the stars and then through one of the washi inner lids. Fill the Mason jar with a beverage and then pop the washi inner lid under the outer lid and screw the outer lid onto the Mason jar. Repeat this step for all the jars.
