Pinafore Dress Sewing Tutorial

Kick off summer with this free dress sewing tutorial. And when the weather cools down, layer it with this stylish jacket you can tie around your waist or into a bow in the back.

Materials: 59 in (150 cm) hemp or linen: 2 yd 15 in (2.2m) fusible interfacing; 35 1/2 in x 19 3/4 in (90 cm x 50 cm)

Step 1

Here is your basic layout.

Apply fusible interfacing to half of each shoulder strap piece. Fold in half lengthwise and sew long raw edges together. Turn straps to right side and topstitch long edges.

Sew side seams.

Double fold dress hem, then toptstitch.

Sew underarm facings to dress.

Apply interfacing to yoke pieces. Sew sides and top edges of yoke pieces to yoke facings, enclosing straps as shown.

Gather top edge of dress front between notches to fit lower edge of front yoke. Sew lower edges of interfaced yoke pieces to dress front and back pieces. Fold in lower edges of yoke undersides, then topstitch all yoke edges ...
