Patchwork Three-Pocket Wall Organizer Pattern

As far as beginner sewing and patchwork quilt projects go, this wall tidy is pretty, and pretty utilitarian.

Materials:

For lower pocket scrap of beige floral linen, to cut a motif and cover buttons 36 x 66 cm beige-and-white polkadot linen, for the outside of the pocket 2 self-cover buttons 36 x 66 cm light fusible wadding 36 x 66 cm beige linen, for the inside of the pocket

For middle pocket 21 x 16 cm floral linen, for the outer small pocket, plus a small piece to cover the buttons 21 x 16 cm white cotton, for the lining of the outer small pocket 60 cm x 10 mm-wide red gingham cotton ribbon 36 x 66 cm checked linen, for the outside of the pocket 36 x 66 cm beige linen, for the inside of the pocket 36 x 66 cm light fusible wadding 2 self-cover buttons

For top pocket 36 x 66 cm beige floral linen, for the outside of the pocket 36 x 66 cm light fusible wadding 36 x 66 cm beige linen, for the inside of the pocket 1.6 m x 25 mm-wide beige cotton ribbon 2 self-cover buttons small piece beige-and-white polka-dot linen

Step 1

Begin with the lower pocket. Cut a motif from the floral fabric in whatever shape you like, then pin it to the center of the polka-dot fabric, 9 cm from the top. Attach it by sewing a border of blanket stitch all around the edge, using 2 strands of beige stranded cotton. Cover the buttons using scraps of floral fabric.

Step 2

Fuse the wadding to the wrong side of the polka-dot fabric, then place this rectangle of fabric on the plain beige fabric, right sides together, with the flower motif at the top. Stitch across this top edge, 1 cm from the edge, turn right side out and press.

Step 3

Place the pocket, motif side down, on your work surface, with the seam at the bottom. Now fold up 29 cm on the bottom edge towards the beige linen, forming a pocket with the flower on the front. Pick up the pocket and fold the polka-dot fabric from the back around to the front, folding it back on itself along the lower fold line, so that it sandwiches the smaller pocket between the beige and polka-dot layers of fabric. Stitch the sides, 1 cm from the edge, taking the edges of the enclosed pocket into the seams. Turn right side out, then press under 1 cm around the opening top edge and sew closed by hand. Sew a line of large running stitches 2 cm below the pocket opening, using 2 strands of red stranded cotton. Cover two buttons with floral fabric and sew them to the bottom of the pocket, on each side.

Step 4

For the middle pocket, place the rectangle of floral fabric on top of the piece of white fabric, right sides together. Cut the gingham ribbon in half and insert the end of one piece between the two layers in the middle of one long edge. Allowing a 1-cm seam, stitch the pieces together around the edges, catching the end of the ribbon in the seam and leaving a small opening in the other long edge. Turn right side out and press, turning into the raw edges of the opening.

Step 5

Center the pocket on top of the checked fabric, 9 cm from the top, and topstitch in place around the sides and bottom, 1 mm from the edge. Sew one end of the other piece of ribbon to the checked fabric, to correspond with the ribbon on the small pocket, so it can be tied closed. Construct the remainder of the pocket as for the lower pocket, using the beige linen and the checked linen. Cover two buttons with floral fabric.

Step 6

Place the bottom edge of the middle pocket over the top of the lower pocket, so that it overlaps by 3 cm, and attach the pockets by sewing a button on each side. Sew a few stitches in the center, to attach the back of the middle pocket to the front of the lower pocket.

Step 7

Make the top pocket in exactly the same way as the lower pocket but, at the point when you would sew the top closed by hand, cut the ribbon in half, fold each piece in two and insert the folded end into the opening on each side, 1 cm from the edge. Sew a line of fine stitches by hand. Cover two buttons with polka-dot fabric, and attach this pocket to the top edge of the middle pocket, as for the other pockets.
