If I had a nickel for every hat in my closet, I'd have at least a dollar! Hats are great accessories that can really pull an outfit together. The Greta Cloche is easy to wear and fun to make with just a bit of jersey and some scraps of felt. The brim is textured with machine-stitched tucks that create dimension and interest. The felt flowers add just the right pop of color and extra flair. The Greta Cloche is a fabulous easy-fit gift for girlfriends, your mom, or yourself.

Using the pattern, cut from the knit fabric:

2 Cloche Crown pieces

Also cut from the knit fabric:

1 brim measuring 11 1/4× 22 (28.5 × 56 cm)

Cut from the felt:

9 Flowers, 3 in each color

Also cut from the felt:

3 strips measuring 1/4× 2 (6 mm × 5 cm), 1 in each color

Step 1

Trace the Flowers

Trace the Flower templates onto the papery side of a piece of freezer paper and loosely cut out each flower. Adhere each template to a piece of felt by placing the shiny side down and lightly pressing on the paper side with a warm, dry iron. Cut out the felt flower along the traced lines, then peel away the freezer paper template. The templates can be reused to cut out a total of nine flowers: one of each size in three different colors.

Step 2

Assemble the Crown

Fold one Cloche Crown piece along the center mark, right sides together, aligning the edges of the dart, and pin. Sew the dart with a 1/4(6 mm) seam allowance, tapering the seam allowance at the dart point to 1⁄8 (3 mm). Trim the rest of the seam allowance to 1⁄8" (3 mm). Repeat for the second Cloche Crown piece.

Step 3

Layer the two crowns, right sides together, aligning the darts and curved edges. Sew the curved edges with a 1/4(6 mm) seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance to 1⁄8 (3 mm).

Step 4

Starting at the bottom edge of the brim piece, measure and mark five parallel lines every 1 1/4(3.2 cm). To create tucks, fold the brim piece, wrong sides together, along the first marked line. Sew 1/4 (6 mm) from the fold for the entire width of the brim. Repeat, folding and sewing along the remaining four marked lines.

Step 5

Starting at one end of the brim, measure and mark lines perpendicular to the tucks every 1" (2.5 cm). Following the first line, stitch down the brim over the tucks, making sure they all lay in the same direction. Repeat this process for every other marked line.

Step 6

Turn your work around and stitch the remaining lines with the tucks pushed in the opposite direction to create an alternating pattern.

Step 7

Fold the brim piece in half, right sides together, matching the short ends of the rectangle. Pin, arranging the ends of the tucks up and down, offsetting them from each other. Sew with a 1/4" (6 mm) seam allowance. You’ve now created a circle.

Step 8

Sew the Cloche

Fold the brim lengthwise, wrong sides together, aligning the raw edges. Now the textured side with the tucks will be referred to as the “right side,” and the flat, smooth part of the brim will be referred to as the “wrong side.”

Step 9

Fold the brim at the center back seam and mark the opposite fold with a pin as the center front. Match the center front to the center back and mark the folds as the two sides.

Step 10

With the brim wrong side out and the crown right side out, place the crown inside of the brim so that right sides are facing. Align and pin the crown side seams with the brim sides along the raw edges. Align and pin the crown center front with the brim center front along the raw edges. Repeat for the two center back markings.
