Gradient Flip-Top Mittens (Free Knitting Pattern)

Apples or oranges, chocolate or vanilla, mittens or finger-less mitts: these are tough decisions that plague us all. With the free knitting pattern for Gradient Flip-Top Mittens, you no longer have to worry about that last one. Worked in natural wool colors and with the simplicity of the pattern, these mittens are suited equally for men and women.

Step 1

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Hand circumference: 8 (91⁄2)”/20.5 (24) cm Length: 10 (103⁄4)”/25.5 (27.5) cm

YARN Deborah Norville Collection Wool Naturals by Premier Yarns, medium worsted weight #4 yarn (100% wool; 205 yd/3.5 oz, 187 m/100 g per skein)

  • 1 skein #425-05 Pewter (A)
  • 1 skein #425-03 Sand (B)
  • 1 skein #425-01 Cream (C)

NEEDLES AND OTHER MATERIALS

  • US 6 (4 mm) set of 5 double-pointed needles (dpns)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Waste yarn
  • US E-4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook
  • Two 5/8”/1.5 cm buttons

GAUGE 20 sts x 21 rows in stranded knitting = 4”/10 cm square Be sure to check your gauge!

NOTES When working chart rows where there are floats longer than 5 sts, such as Rows 3 and 5, twist the yarn to “trap” the long floats.

STITCH GUIDE K2, P2 Ribbing (multiple of 4 sts) Rnd 1: * K2, p2; rep from * to end. Rep Rnd 1 for patt. K1, P1 Ribbing (even number of sts) Rnd 1: * K1, p1; rep from * to end. Rep Rnd 1 for patt.

Step 2

Right Mitten With A, CO 32 (40) sts. Divide sts evenly between 4 dpns and join to work in the rnd.

Cuff Work in K2, P2 Ribbing for 10 (12) rnds.

Wrist Setup rnd: * K4 (5), m1L; rep from * to end—40 (48) sts. Knit 8 (10) rnds. Work Rows 1–4 of Gradient chart; chart will be repeated 5 (6) times across rnd.

Thumb Gusset Rnd 1: Work Row 5 of Gradient chart across 22 (26) sts, pm, work Row 1 of Thumb chart, pm, work in patt to end—1 st inc’d. Rnd 2: Work Row 6 of Gradient chart to m, work Row 2 of Thumb chart, work in patt to end. Cont in patt through Row 16 of Gradient chart/Row 12 of Thumb chart—13 Thumb sts. Next rnd: Work Row 17 of Gradient chart to m, place Thumb sts on waste yarn, work in patt to end—40 (48 sts) rem.

Step 3

Hand Cont in patt through Row 27 of Gradient chart. Break B.

Smaller Size Only Dec rnd: With C, * k2tog, p1, k1, p1; rep from * to end— 32 sts rem.

Larger Size Only Dec rnd: With C, * k2tog, [p1, k1] twice, p2tog, [k1, p1] twice; rep from * to end—40 sts rem.

Both Sizes Work in K1, P1 Ribbing for 2 rnds. Bind off all sts in patt.

Flip-Top Locate first st of Row 19 on back of mitten. Hold B inside mitten. Insert crochet hook from RS to inside of mitten, grab loop of yarn, and pull to front—1 st picked up. Working from right to left, pick up 19 (23) more sts along Row 19. Place sts on a dpn. Break yarn. With B, CO 19 (23) sts, knit across 20 (24) sts from dpn— 39 (47) sts. Divide sts between 4 dpns and join to work in the rnd. Rnd 1: [P1, k1] 9 (11) times, p1, work Row 20 of Gradient chart to end Rnd 2: [P1, k1] 9 (11) times, work Row 21 of Gradient chart to end. Rnd 3: M1L, work Row 22 of Gradient chart across 19 (23) sts, work Row 22 of chart across rem sts—40 (48) sts. Cont in patt through Row 43 of Gradient chart—5 (6) sts rem. Break yarn, leaving 24” tail, thread through tapestry needle and pass through rem live sts. Fasten off.

Step 4

Button Loop With crochet hook, insert hook in Flip-Top 1 st away from tail, sl st to join, ch 8, fasten off. Sew end inside Flip-Top securely.

Thumb Place held Thumb sts evenly onto 3 dpns. With C, beg at center of Thumb gap, pick up and knit 2 sts (first 2 sts of Thumb chart Row 13), work across Thumb sts in patt, pick up and knit 1st—16 sts. Work Row 14 of chart—14 sts rem. Work Rows 15–25 of Thumb chart. Next rnd: [K3 tog] 4 times, k2tog. Break yarn, thread through tapestry needle, and pass through rem live sts. Fasten off.

Step 5

Left Mitten Work as for Right Mitten to Thumb Gusset.

Thumb Gusset Rnd 1: Work Row 5 of Gradient chart to last 2 sts, pm, work Row 1 of Thumb chart, pm, work in patt to end—1 st inc’d. Rnd 2: Work Row 6 of Gradient chart to m, work Row 2 of Thumb chart, work in patt to end. Cont in patt through Row 18 of Gradient chart/Row 12 of Thumb chart—13 Thumb sts. Next rnd: Work Row 19 of Gradient chart to m, place Thumb sts on waste yarn, work in patt to end—40 (48 sts) rem. Comp as for Right Mitten.

Step 6

Finishing Weave in loose ends. Fold back Flip-Top. Position button underneath Button Loop; sew in place.
