NO-SEW GROMMET CURTAINS (FREE PATTERN)
Luckily, something as easy as switching out curtain panels can really change the look of a room. Making your own curtains gives you the freedom to make them the exact size, shape, color and thickness that you need. And grommets are a simple concept that will really make your curtains pop!
Skill Level: II
Time Estimate: 60–90 minutes
Step 1
Supplies:
- Medium-weight upholstery fabric, 55–60 inches wide (amount depends on curtain sizes needed)
- Double-sided fusible adhesive tape, 1/2 inch wide
- 1 1/2-inch curtain grommets (You’ll need about six grommets for each 55- to 60-inch-wide curtain panel.)
- Curtain rod, less than 11/2 inches in diameter (slide grommets onto rod before assembling to check the fit)
Toolkit:
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Hem guide ruler
- Pen or fine-tip marker
- Iron/Ironing board
Step 2
Determine the curtain height that you need and add 7 1/2 inches extra to that measurement.
If you’re making one panel per window, measure the width of your window and multiply by 1 1/2 (1.5). That will be your fabric width dimension.
If you’re making two panels per window, measure the width of your window and divide by 2. Then multiply that number by 1 1/2 and that will be your fabric width dimension for each of the two panels. Then add 2 inches extra to the width of each panel, for finishing your side edges.
If you want fuller curtains, multiply your measurements by 2 instead of 1 1/2.)
Cut the fabric to these dimensions. Fold one of your side edges over 1/2 inch, with the wrong sides together, and iron flat.
Step 3
Fold it over another 1/2 inch and iron again.
Step 4
Lift the folded edge up and place a strip of fusible adhesive tape in the fold, the whole length of the curtain.
Step 5
Fold the flap of fabric back down and iron it in place according to the adhesive’s package instructions. Avoid pulling or dragging the iron across the fabric.
Repeat with the other side edge of your curtain panel.
Step 6
Fold the top edge of your curtain over 1/2 inch, wrong sides together, and iron flat.
Step 7
Fold it over another 4 1/2 inches and iron again.
Step 8
Lift the folded edge up and place a strip of fusible adhesive tape in the fold, the whole width of the curtain. Fold the flap of fabric back down and iron it in place.
Step 9
You will see a gap in each of the sides of the panel where you folded over the top edge of your fabric. Open up each gap and place a piece of adhesive inside. Iron flat, fusing those layers together.
Step 10
Situate the curtain in front of you with the right side facing down and determine where you’d like to place each grommet along the top of the panel. Mark the center of each with a dot. Be sure that you are centering each dot from top to bottom of the folded over 41/2-inch-wide section. Mark the grommet closest to each end about 2 inches from the edge. The rest of the grommet dots should be evenly spaced between them.
Step 11
Read the grommet package instructions and follow the directions for drawing templates for each grommet, centering your template on each of the dots that you marked along the top of your curtain panel.
Step 12
- Cut out the holes for each grommet. Follow the instructions for placing the front and back grommet pieces. Then snap them together. Fold the bottom edge up 1/2 inch, wrong sides together, and iron it flat. Fold it over another 2 inches and iron it again. Add the fusible adhesive tape under the folded flap of fabric, the entire width of the curtain, and iron it in place.
Step 13
Thread the curtain rod through the grommets, and hang.
