CROCHETED FLOWER HEXAGON BLANKET (FREE PATTERN)
A beautiful flower pattern and a great way of using up scraps of DK yarn! Tension is not critical in this pattern.
Materials: Stylecraft Classique Cotton DK, 100% cotton 2 x 100g balls of shade 3666 Shell Pink Rowan Handknit Cotton DK, 100% cotton 3 x 50g balls of shade 263 Bleached 2 x 50g balls in each of shade 303 Sugar, shade 354 Sunshine, shade 345 Cloud, shade 356 Raspberry shade 309 Celery and shade 334 Delphinium 4mm hook
Size: Approximately 112 x 92cm

Step 1
SPECIAL STITCHES 2 treble cluster (2trCL): yoh, insert hook in st (or ring), yoh, pull yarn through (3 loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through first 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook), yoh, insert hook in same st (or ring), yoh, pull yarn through (4 loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through first 2 loops on hook (3 loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through all 3 loops on hook to complete 2tr CL.
3 treble cluster (3trCL) worked into a ring: yoh, insert hook into ring, yoh and pull yarn through (3 loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through first 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook), yoh, insert hook into ring, yoh and pull yarn through (4 loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through first 2 loops on hook (3 loops on hook), yoh, insert hook into ring, yoh and pull yarn through (5 loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through first 2 loops on hook (4 loops on hook), yoh and pull through all loops on hook to complete 3tr cluster.
Make 64 hexagons.Always use Celery for Step 4 and Bleached for Step 5, but vary other colours randomly for other rounds.
Step 2
Flower Hexagon pattern
Using 4mm hook and first round colour, make a MR. Ch3, 2trCL into MR, ch3, *3trCL into MR, ch3; rep from * 4 times. Join with a ss in top of 2trCL. Pull MR closed. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join in 2nd round colour to any ch sp. Ch2, [1tr, ch3, 2trCL, ch1] in same ch sp, [2trCL, ch3, 2trCL, ch1] in each ch sp around. Join with a ss in top of ch-2. Do not fasten off.
*[1htr, 3tr, 1htr] in next ch sp, ss in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Step 3
Join in Bleached to any ch-3 sp from Step 4. Ch3 (counts as first tr), 2tr in same ch-3 sp, *ch2, 3tr in next ch-3 sp; rep from * across all ch-3 sps, ch2. Join with a ss in top of ch-3. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join in your choice of new colour in ch sp above a ss from Step 4 (top of a petal), [ch3, 2tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1] in same ch sp, *[4tr, ch1] in next ch sp, [3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1] in next ch sp; rep from * around. Join with a ss in top of ch-3.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Step 4
Joining Hexagons as You Go
You can make all hexagons separately and then sew them together at end, but I hate the sewing up process – I’d rather spend my time crocheting than sewing! Joining hexagons as you go isn’t difficult and it means your blanket will grow at a very satisfying speed.
Make 1 hexagon by completing ALL 6 Steps. Make a 2nd hexagon by following Steps 1–5 only.
Begin Step 6 by joining in new colour and working first corner [ch3, 2tr, ch2, 3tr, ch1] and 1 side [4tr, ch1]. When you reach 2nd corner, only make first half of corner [3tr, ch1]. Ss in ch-2 sp at corner of first (complete) hexagon.
Working back in ‘incomplete’ hexagon, continue to work remainder of corner, omitting the ch-2 part and work [3tr, ch1]. You will now have linked hexagons at one corner edge.
Step 5
Working into next ch sp of incomplete hexagon, make first half of a corner (3tr, ch1). Ss in ch sp in adjacent corner of completed hexagon.
Finish making corner on incomplete hexagon (3tr in same ch sp). Complete remainder of hexagon following the last step of the Flower Block Pattern before joining (see step 6 above).You should now have joined 2 hexagons along one straight side.
Make and join a line of 8 hexagons. Noting that top and bottom edges are staggered by half a hexagon, up and then down on each line, continue to make and join hexagons until a total of 64 have been joined to form blanket (8 lines of 8 hexagons), joined on 1, 2 or 3 sides.
You can carry on joining as-you-go across multiple hexagons by working anti-clockwise around edges. Instead of making ch2 in between 2 sets of 3tr in corner, make ch1 and ss in adjacent hexagon. At a side, work ss in adjacent hexagon in place of ch1.
When you reach a corner with multiple hexagons, ss in between both hexagons. It’s a brilliant way of quickly growing your blanket.
Step 6
