Crocheted Children's Fox Mittens (free pattern)

The pattern for these fox mittens, also known as fox gloves, was excerpted with permission from Ruby and Custard's Crochet: Creative crochet projects to make, share and love.

MATERIALS: Rowan Handknit Cotton DK, 100% cotton 1 x 50g ball in each of shade 251 Ecru and shade 252 Black 2 x 50g balls of shade 350 Florence 3.5mm crochet hook 4 x small black buttons for eyes SIZE: To fit a child’s hands

Tension is not critical in the pattern.

TECHNIQUES Working into the front right diagonal strand (frds) Ignore the 2 loops at the top of the stitch that form a ‘V’ shape and work into the small diagonal strand at the front top left of the stitch. This method gives a ribbed effect to the stitches.

Step 1

LEFT MITTEN Using 3.5mm hook and Florence, ch30. Join with a ss to first ch, taking care not to twist foundation ch. (30 ch) Ch2 (counts as first htr), 1htr in each ch to end. Join with a ss in top of ch-2. (30 sts) Ch2 (counts as first htr), 1htr in frds of each st to end. Join with a ss in top of ch-2. (30 sts) Rep Step 3 three times. (You should now have 4 rows, each containing 30 ribbed effect htr sts) Ch2 (counts as first htr), 1htr in each st to end. Join with a ss in top of ch-2. (30 sts) Rep Step 5 five times.

MAKE THUMBHOLE Ch2 (counts as first htr), 1htr in each of next 3 sts, ch5, miss 4 sts, 1htr in next st, 1htr in each st to end. Join with a ss in top of ch-2. (31 sts) Ch2 (counts as first htr), 1htr in each of next 2 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts, 1htr in each st to end. Join with a ss in top of ch-2. (29 sts) Ch2 (counts as first htr), 1htr in each of next 2 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts, 1htr in each st to end. Join with a ss in top of ch-2. RIGHT MITTEN

Follow Steps 1–6 of Left Mitten.

MAKE THUMBHOLE Ch2 (counts as first htr), 1htr in each of next 20 sts, ch5, miss 4 sts, 1htr in next st, 1htr in each st to end. Join with a ss in top of ch-2. (31 sts) Ch2 (counts as first htr), 1htr in each of next 19 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts, 1htr in each st to end. Join with a ss in top of ch-2. (29 sts) Ch2 (counts as first htr), 1htr in each of next 19 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts, 1htr in each st to end. Join with a ss in top of ch-2. (27 sts) Ch2, 1htr in each of next 19 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts, 1htr in last st. Join with a ss in top of ch-2. Step 4

MAKE THUMB ON BOTH MITTENS

Holding mitten, find gap you made for thumbhole. Count 4 sts along base from right to left and rejoin Florence in 2nd st. Ch2 (counts as first htr), 1htr in each of next 2 sts, 1htr in side of htr at thumbhole edge, 1htr in each of ch-5 along top of thumbhole, 1htr in side of htr at thumbhole edge, 1htr in last st. Join with a ss in top of ch-2.
(11 sts) Ch2 (counts as first htr), 1htr in each st to end. Join with a ss in top of ch-2. (11 sts) Rep Step 2 twice. Ch2 (counts as first htr), *1htr in each of next 3 sts, htr2tog over next 2 sts; rep from * once. Join with a ss in top of ch-2. (9 sts) Ch2 (counts as first htr), htr2tog over next 2 sts, *1htr in next st, htr2tog over next 2 sts; rep from * once. (6 sts) Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Press top of thumb flat and sew across top sts. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Step 5

FOX EARS Outer Ear (make 4 – 2 per mitten) Using 3.5mm hook and Florence, ch7, miss 2 ch, 1htr in each of next 3 ch, htr2tog over last 2 ch. (4 sts) Ch2 (counts as first htr), 1htr in next st, htr2tog over last 2 sts. (3 sts) Ch2 (counts as first htr), htr2tog over last 2 sts. (2 sts) Ch1, 1dc in last st. Fasten off and weave in ends. Starting in bottom corner of Outer Ear triangle and working towards fasten off point, rejoin Florence. Ch1 (counts as first dc), 5dc evenly along side edge of triangle, 3dc in top of triangle, 6dc evenly along other edge. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Inner Ear (make 4 – 2 per mitten) Using 3.5mm hook and Ecru, ch5, miss first ch, [htr2tog over next 2 ch] twice. (2 sts) Ch1, dc2tog over last 2 sts. (1 st) Fasten off and weave in ends. Starting in bottom corner of Inner Ear triangle and working towards fasten off point, rejoin Ecru.Ch1 (counts as first dc), 2dc evenly along side edge. 3dc in top of triangle, 3dc evenly along other edge. Fasten off and weave in ends. Place an Inner Ear centrally on top of an Outer Ear, matching base edges together. Sew pieces together carefully using a length of Ecru, taking care that the stitches do not show on the back of the Outer Ear. Repeat for other ear.

Step 6

FOX CHEEKS (make 4 – 2 per mitten) Using 3.5mm hook and Ecru, ch9, miss first ch, 1dc in next ch, 1htr in next ch, 1tr in next ch, 1dtr in each of next 2 ch, 1tr in next ch, 1htr in next ch, 1dc in last ch. Fasten off and weave in ends. NOSE (make 2) Using 3.5mm hook and Black, make a MR. Ch1, [3htr, 1dc] into MR. Pull MR closed. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Step 7

DECORATE MITTENS Pin Fox Cheeks to front of mitten at base edges. Sew in place using a length of Ecru. Pin Fox Ears on top of mitten above cheeks and sew in place using a length of Florence. Pin nose to end of mitten, between cheeks, and sew in place using a length of Black. Attach buttons as eyes and sew in place with a length of Ecru. Press top of mitten flat and, using tail end, sew across both sides of top sts to close it up. Fasten off and weave in ends. Warm some little hands!
