Crochet Sock Monkey Shoulder Bag

This fun sock monkey messenger bag has lots of room and arms for straps! It's easy to make, though involved, and perfect for a new school season.

Skill Level: Easy

Finished Dimensions: Approx 11-1/2(29 cm) wide; 10-1/2 (26.5 cm) tall; 3" (7.5 cm) deep at base

Yarn: Patons Classic Wool, a 100% wool medium weight yarn packaged in 3.5 oz/100 g balls containing 223 yds/205 m: 2 balls 77252 Dark Grey Marl for MC, 1 ball 00202 Aran for CA, and 1 ball 00230 Bright Red for CB

Hook: 3.75 mm/U.S. F-5

Other Materials: Small quantity of black yarn for embroidery of nostrils and mouth Two 1(2.5 cm) buttons for eyes Fiberfill 14-1/2 x 26" (37 cm x 66 cm) piece of fabric for lining Sewing needle and thread

Gauge: 17 sts and 18 rows = 4" (10 cm) in sc

Step 1

Note: To join new color, work to last 2 lps on hook. Draw new color through last 2 lps then proceed in new color.

Bag Note: Front, Bottom, and Back worked all in one piece.

With CA, ch 51.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end. Turn. (50 sc)

Rows 2–18: Ch 1, sc in each sc to end of row. Turn. At end of Row 18, join MC. Break CA.

Rows 19–107: With MC, ch 1, sc in each sc to end of row. Turn. At end of Row 107, join CA. Break MC.

Rows 108–143: With CA, ch 1, sc in each sc to end of row. Turn. At end of Row 143, join CB. Break CA.

Row 144: With CB, ch 1, sc in each sc to end of row. Do not turn.

Row 145: Ch 1, work 1 rev sc in each sc to end of row.

Fasten off.

Step 2

Sides (make 2) With CA, ch 14.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end. Turn. (13 sc)

Rows 2–18: Ch 1, sc in each sc to end of row. Turn. Join MC at end of last row. Break CA.

Rows 19–52: With MC, ch 1, sc in each sc to end of row. Turn. Fasten off.

Step 3

Muzzle With CB, ch 21.

Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 18 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working in opposite side of ch, sc in each of next 18 ch, 2 sc in last ch. Join with sl st to first sc. (42 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in same sp as last sl st, sc in each of next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 9 sc,* 2 sc in each of next 3 sc, rep from * to ** once more, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc. Join with sl st to first sc. (50 sc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same sp as last sl st, sc in each of next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc,* sc in each of next 6 sc, rep from * to ** once more. Join CA with sl st to first sc. (58 sc)

Rnd 4: With CA, ch 1, 2 sc in same sp as last sl st, sc in each of next 23 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 2 sc,* 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, rep from * to ** once more, 2 sc in last sc. Join with sl st to first sc. (66 sc)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in same sp as last sl st, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 21 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc,* sc in each of next 3 sc, rep from * to ** once more, sc in last sc. Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in same sp as last sl st, sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 25 sc, 2 sc in next sc,* sc in each of next 15 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * to ** once more, sc in each of next 12 sc. Join with sl st to first sc. (88 sc)

Rnds 9–11: Ch 1, sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc.

Fasten off.

Step 4

Arm Straps (make 2) With CA, ch 2.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) 3 times. Join with sl st to first sc. (9 sc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, (sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 3 times. Join with sl st to first sc. (12 sc)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, (sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 3 times. Join with sl st to first sc. (15 sc)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, (sc in each of next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 3 times. Join with sl st to first sc. (18 sc)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc.

Work 6 more rnds even in sc, joining MC at end of last rnd.

With MC, work even in sc until piece from beg measures 14" (35.5 cm). Join CA at end of last rnd. Break MC.

With CA, work 8 more rnds even in sc. Fasten off.

Step 5

Ears (make 2) With MC, ch 25.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end of chain. Turn. (24 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, (sc2tog) 12 times. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 4: Ch 1, (sc2tog) 6 times. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 5: Ch 1, (sc2tog) 3 times. (3 sts)

Fasten off.

Step 6

Finishing Pin Sides to Bag, leaving approx 4-1/2" (11.5 cm) extended at back for fold-over flap. Using CB, sew tog with blanket stitch.

Sew closed ends of Arm Straps tog to form Strap. With CB, sew Strap ends to each Side using backstitch. Sew side ends of Ears tog, creating a cupped shape. Sew Ears to Bag Sides. Stuff Muzzle lightly and sew to front of Bag. With black yarn, stitch two ‘X’ stitches above mouth. With black yarn and using backstitch, embroider mouth. Sew 2 buttons above Muzzle to form eyes.

Bag Lining Fold fabric in half lengthwise and stitch sides together using a 1/2(1 cm) seam allowance. Fold 1/2 (1 cm) seam allowance over along top edge and sew to Bag opening.
