Japanese Creations and U-Can teach classic Japanese crafts

If you want to learn about sewing a swing skirt, or crocheting animals or even cake frosting logistics, there are several companies that offer in-depth video courses. Even with the millions of DIY videos on the web, english instruction for some crafts, particularly international ones, can be hard to find.

Japanese Creations, as you might expect from the name, focuses on far east crafts. While the site is new, the company behind it, U-Can, has been in business since the 1950s, and they take correspondence education very seriously. The site’s first three courses teach Chigiri-e (paper collage art), Etegami (watercolor drawing), and Chirimen (kimono cloth crafts). Each package includes lifetime access to instructional videos, digital instruction booklet and on-demand messaging with an instructor.

The courses also come with an impressive box of materials and tools. Anyone interested in Chigiri-e can also dabble with the art form at can entry level price tag. Project kits start at $24 and a collection of starter tools is $26. Traditionally the craft requires about three years to learn. But the end result makes paper collage look like a painting. Watch the following videos for more info about Chigiri-e and the other courses.

At the end of the post you can enter to win a $100 Japanese Creations gift card. You have until April 30, 2018 to enter.

Describing Chigiri-e as paper collaging undersells the detailed handiwork needed to create the imagers found many of the projects. The above video offers a preview of a goldfish project with leaves made from thin strips of washi paper.

Chirimen projects include sewing small animals pin cushions and other pieces out of kimino cloth. The preceding video offers details instructions on making a coin purse

Etegami is all about drawing paper cards with heart and personality. Technical mastery is secondary. Since the inks are watercolor there are no redos. Japanese Creations’ course emphasizes the importance of having fun making paper cards.
