One of the most popular knitting stitches, Stockinette is a technique many beginning knitters learn early. Stockinette stitch has interlocking arrows on the “right” side and pebbles on the back or “wrong side.” Some say the pebbles look like garter stitch. It uses the knit stitch on the facing side and and purl stitch back. Three video tutorials below explain how to do the stockinette. If you drop a stitch while learning, the last video explains how to fix it.
New Stitch a Day explains how to knit the first row of knitting stitches and then alternate to create all pull stitches. While it’s a very useful and malleable stitch, you need to block the border since stockinette has a tendency to curl on the edges.
Studio knit explains that stockinette stitch is great for making scarves. If it's been a while since you've knitted, you may need to brush up on knitting and purling. If so, there are videos we’ve picked to learn the knitting basics. To keep the fabric from curling, the instructor knits two garter stitches on to create a garter edge on each side.
Still not able to see how to knit the Stockinette stitch? Wool and the Gang demonstrates with chunky yarn and large needles, which make it easier to follow the movement of the technique. However, there doesn’t appear to be sound on the video, so watch carefully.
Have you dropped a stitch? I Knit with Cat Fur explains how to pick up a stitch using a crochet hook or knitting needles. With a little patience, you can pull the dropped stitches through with the hook. At the end you’ll need to drop the thread from the dropped stitch onto the needle. If you don’t have a crochet hook, it’s also possible to pick up stitches with your knitting needles. The instructor also explains how to fix the dropped stitch on the wrong side as well. It’s a bit more difficult to fix from the wrong side, but possible.
