Make a Knit Piece Worth $1,000? Yes with Free Designer Knitting Patterns

Perhaps getting us ready, the always-sartorial New York Times recently shared a slideshow of colorful knits by top fashion brands. As yarn crazy as we are, the CraftFoxes team couldn’t help but fall in love with the gorgeous hues and knit patterns featured in this editorial collection. 

But while the images captivated our hearts, the price tags terrified our wallets. No matter how adorable, we simply don’t have two grand to spare on a knit Prada vest. Why do you think the prices are so high? I’m no knitting expert but I don’t see any super-intricate patterns used – many even look machine knitted. Perhaps it’s the material?

Unicorn wool must be hard to come by these days – though, admittedly, actual material like cashmere can get quite expensive. Or maybe the legacy behind these big fashion names justify the rent check going towards a sweater this month? Fashion is an interesting dance between skill, politics and demand. It’s challenging for an outsider like me to attempt to justify the price tags of some of these pieces. I simply don’t know the inner workings beyond what Google searches tell me. Plus, if folks have the coin to spend – and want to spend it on expanding their closet – who am I to judge? And who says high-fashion knitwear can only be for the rich, anyway? We are a craft community, after all – where there’s a will, there’s a DIY alternative.
