With all the cold weather we’ve been having lately, you might be feeling the need for a cozy blanket to wrap up in on the couch. Afghans — knitted or crocheted blankets — are especially warm and infinitely customizable. You can knit or crochet just about any pattern you’d like into an afghan, and you can get as creative as you’d like. If you’re just starting out in the world of crochet, or if you’re looking for some inspiration, try out these patterns to create your own cozy afghan.

This winter has been brutally cold for many of us. This crochet afghan has such happy bright colors, it reminds me of spring and lifts me out of the gloomy mood of mid-winter. The gorgeous pattern was created by Susan Carlson of the Felted Button (she has tons of awesome patterns). The pattern is free and very easy to follow so it would be a great pattern for beginners.  For this project you will need to know how to complete basic crochet stitches: sl, st, ch, sc, dc. The project calls for 6 skeins of bright colorful yarns with the gauge of your choice.

This afghan pattern, called “Summer in Sweden,” might help you dream of warmer days. With its warm colors and floral pattern, you might feel that much warmer when cuddled under this afghan. In total, this afghan contains 54 squares assembled in a 9 x 6 rectangle. The pattern says it will make an afghan that is 48" x 74”. For this project you will need 6 skeins of yarn in a color of your choice, this turquoise is amazing by the way! You'll also need a4.5 mm [US G-7] and a yarn needle.

If you also share an unexplained love for owls this is probably the afghan for you. It is super cute and whimsical and would be a great gift for any owl lover. This pattern was created by Marken from the Hat & I and has received awesome reviews. It is an intermediate level crochet afghan pattern and measures 32" x 32" when finished. For this project you need 32 buttons for the owl eyes, a size I/9/5.5 mm crochet hook, and 4 skeins of yarn for the base / 2 skeins of yarn for the owls.

Whether you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day project, or you just like the look of a heart pattern, this sweetheart ripple afghan is a gorgeous blanket. This afghan pattern also comes with an exciting feature — it’s reversible! On one side there are little interlocking hearts and on the other is a zigzag pattern. That way, if you’re not really into the hearts one day, you can flip over the blanket and use the zigzag side. For this project, you’ll need worsted / 10 ply yarn and a 5.5 mm hook. As for the gauge, 13 stitches and 16 rows = 4 inches in single crochet.
