This week for our Blogger Profile we are featuring Darcy Childress, from the Modern Cozy blog. Darcy blogs about all kinds of crafting projects, such as quilting, baking, holiday-themed crafts, kids’ crafts and so much more. Right now she has many crafting ideas for Christmas! Of course, Darcy also has an Etsy shop called Modern Cozy, where you can purchase journal covers and fabric that she has made. We asked Darcy some questions about her blog and her crafts, and here is what she had to say.
Can you tell us a little bit about your blog and when you started it?
I thought about starting a blog for a long time before I actually got up the courage to do it. I was an elementary school art teacher for twelve years and have been lucky enough to stay home with my daughter since the summer of 2010, which is when I started my blog. Originally I wanted a way to communicate with my best friend like we were still at work together. I figured if no one else read it, at least she could check in and see what we were up to. It quickly grew to be a creative outlet that I loved for myself as well as a way to connect with other crafty souls. My blog name came from trying to figure out a way to explain the home life I'm trying to create. I write about a little bit of life and baking and a lot of sewing but what I'm really trying to create is that feeling you get when you see your warm, lit windows as you get home in the cool evening darkness — that coziness that comes from friends and family and knowing you're always welcome. I was and am continuously inspired by modern quilting — the colors, the designs and designers, the way technology has helped connect us. So Modern Cozy was born from the marriage of those ideas and has been growing ever since.
What is one of your favorite projects you've ever made?
I think my last project is always my favorite one! The Anna Maria Horner mini quilt I just made for the Schnitzel and Boo mini quilt swap made me really happy — I could see how far I've grown as a quilter and it turned out exactly as I'd pictured it.
Where do you find inspiration for your creative projects?
I'm particularly hooked on Instagram right now — it’s so fun to see what everyone is working on in real time! I think if you're open to it you can find inspiration everywhere — the changing colors of a new season, a design you like but can imagine just a little differently or a void that needs to be filled. For me that void is often in the shape of a new bag. :)
Which of your craft projects took the longest to finish?
Ummm, I have so many projects "in progress" that I wonder if they'll ever get done. I have a Christmas table runner that I cut out four years ago and finally finished up last year. Oh, and the pajama pants I cut out and then sewed two years later. This is a dangerous question for me. I think I probably haven't finished my "longest to finish" project yet, but I'll keep you posted.
Describe your personal style in 3 words.
Bright, warm, clean.
When I'm not crafting, I can be found...
Lots of mom stuff - baking, crafting, cleaning (sad but true), watching Team Umizoomi or engaged in a marathon Sorry! session with my family.
If you were to be cast on a reality TV show, which one would you choose and why?
Ooh, I would hope it was a cooking one! I would die on a survival show, would add no drama to a live-in-the-house type show as I sat in the corner with my book, and I really, truly cannot dance. "The Great American Bake-Off" seems like it would be about my speed.
